To commemorate Walt Whitman’s birthday, authors Professor Paul Salveson and Dr Kirsten Harris, will share their knowledge and research about the American poet.
Whitman had a group of devoted followers in Bolton who set up the Whitman Fellowship and referred to themselves as disciples. They meet every year to celebrate his birthday.
At the event Professor Salveson, who is currently a visiting professor at the University of Huddersfield, will talk about: 'Walt Whitman's spiritual disciples in Bolton’. We also welcome Dr Harris, from Bristol University, who will present "Poetry be blowed!": Walt Whitman and his Bolton Readers.
The free event will take place on Saturday 28 May at 11am at Bolton Central Library and Museum. No need to book.
You can also join in the Whitman Walk (organised by the Bolton Whitman Group) which will take place at 2pm from the Barrow Bridge Bus turnaround.
The celebrations continue at Bolton Socialist Club, Wood Street, at 7.30pm, where members of the Bolton Whitman Group will Skype birthday greetings with the Whitman House in Camden, New Jersey.
